EIC in Labradors: Reading the DNM1 Test

Exercise-induced collapse in Labradors is a genetic condition, not a training failure. A dog that carries one copy of the DNM1 mutation usually never collapses, and a dog with two copies may collapse after five to twenty minutes of hard running. The DNM1 test returns three results: clear, carrier, affected. A carrier bred to a clear dog produces no affected puppies.

The condition has a name in the field: EIC. It shows up in young, fit dogs doing what they were bred to do, and it is the reason a DNA swab now travels with the pedigree.

What is exercise-induced collapse?

Exercise-induced collapse is a sudden loss of muscle control during intense activity. The dog is running, usually at full speed, and then the rear legs stop coordinating. The gait turns wobbly, the dog may drag a hind foot, and in a full episode it goes down. The dog stays conscious. Most episodes last five to fifteen minutes, and recovery is complete.

EIC is not heat stroke, though the two get confused on a warm October day. It is not a seizure. It is not a heart problem. The trigger is sustained high-intensity work: sprinting, repeated retrieves, steep ground, excitement stacked on exertion. A pheasant flush in tall CRP grass will do it. So will a long water retrieve in cold air.

The first episode usually arrives between five months and three years of age. Some dogs collapse once and never again. Others collapse every time the work gets hard enough. The pattern is what a veterinarian uses, along with a DNA test, to separate EIC from orthopedic pain, low blood sugar, or a spinal issue.

A dog that goes down in the field needs shade, water, and rest, not more pressure. Most are standing within minutes. Any dog that collapses should see a veterinarian, because the list of things that look like EIC is longer than EIC itself. Owners who keep retrievers in working condition often pair that visit with routine veterinary follow-up of a retriever, since the same appointment can cover hips, ears, and weight.

How is a DNM1 test read?

The DNM1 test is a DNA test. It reads one gene, dynamin 1, on chromosome 9 in the dog. A lab takes a cheek swab or a blood sample, extracts DNA, and looks at one specific spot in the sequence. The mutation is a single base change, and the test reports how many copies of it the dog has.

The result comes back in one of three forms.

Clear: zero copies of the mutation. The dog cannot pass EIC to a puppy and is very unlikely to collapse from this cause.

Carrier: one copy. The dog has one normal copy of the gene and one mutated copy. Carriers generally do not collapse. A small number show mild signs under extreme conditions, but the overwhelming majority run, hunt, and train without an episode.

Affected: two copies, one from each parent. These dogs are at high risk of collapse. Not every affected dog collapses, and the severity varies, but the risk is real and the dog should be managed accordingly.

The test is a probability tool, not a diagnosis. A clear result does not mean the dog will never tire. An affected result does not mean the dog will collapse tomorrow. It means the gene is present in two copies, and the owner now knows what to watch for.

Can a carrier Labrador collapse?

A carrier Labrador can collapse, but it is uncommon. The mutation is recessive in its main effect. One working copy of the dynamin 1 gene is enough for normal muscle signaling in most situations. Carriers that do collapse tend to be pushed to extremes: repeated sprints in heat, long hunts on hard ground, or a second underlying problem.

This matters because carriers are common. In some Labrador lines the carrier rate runs high enough that a buyer will meet one. A carrier is not a broken dog. It is a dog with one copy of a variant, and the practical question is what the dog is bred to, not whether the dog can work.

A carrier that never sees a hard field season may never show a sign. A carrier that runs three days a week in August may show a wobble once and never again. Owners who hunt their dogs should know the result and adjust the work, not the dog's place in the truck.

Why a carrier can be bred to a clear dog

A carrier bred to a clear dog produces puppies that are either clear or carrier. No puppy from that pairing is affected. That is the whole arithmetic of a recessive trait, and it is why breeders do not have to remove every carrier from a program.

A carrier bred to another carrier produces a quarter affected puppies on average. A carrier bred to an affected dog produces affected puppies at a high rate. The pairing is the decision, not the label.

The reason to keep a carrier in a breeding program is that the dog may carry other traits worth keeping: hips, elbows, temperament, nose, stamina, the ability to sit steady in a cold duck blind. Removing every carrier from the gene pool narrows the breed. Breeding carriers only to clear dogs keeps the working qualities and drops the affected puppies out of the equation.

A responsible breeder tests both dogs before a litter. The results go on paper. A buyer can ask for them, and a breeder who will not show them is answering a different question.

What an episode looks like in the field

The dog is running. The rear end starts to swing. One hind leg crosses under the body, then the other. The dog slows, then sits, then goes down on its side. The eyes are open and tracking. The dog is panting hard. It may try to stand and fail.

Five minutes pass. The dog lifts its head. Ten minutes pass. The dog stands, wobbles, and walks. Fifteen minutes pass. The dog is normal, tail up, ready to go again. That recovery is the signature of EIC. A dog with a spinal injury does not bounce back in a quarter hour.

In cold water the picture changes. A dog that collapses in a duck pond in November is not just an EIC question. Cold water pulls heat out of a dog fast, and a Labrador that goes down in the water needs to come out and warm up before anything else. EIC and hypothermia can stack, and the field handling is the same: get the dog out, get it dry, get it warm, let it recover.

What owners do with the result

A clear dog is bred and hunted without restriction. A carrier is hunted with an eye on duration and heat, and bred only to a clear dog. An affected dog is managed: shorter sessions, cooler hours, water available, and a veterinarian who knows the history.

The test costs less than a bag of pheasant loads. It is done once. The result does not change at two years or eight years. It sits in the file next to the hip score and the eye exam.

No test replaces watching the dog. A Labrador that wobbles on the second retrieve of the day is telling the owner something, and the DNM1 result tells the owner what that something probably is. The two together are how a working dog stays in the field for a decade.

The northern plains angle

In the Dakotas, the pheasant season opens in October and the duck season runs into the cold. A dog may work eighty days between September and January. That is a lot of sprinting in CRP grass and a lot of water retrieves in wind. EIC shows up in exactly that kind of schedule, which is why the swab matters here more than it does in a backyard.

A dog that has never collapsed in a mild climate may collapse in a hard plains season. The work is the trigger. The gene is the reason. The test is how an owner finds out before the dog does.
